Overview

What Is Garage Floor Coatings?

Garage floor coatings are the most impactful upgrade you can make to a residential garage in Alabama. A properly installed polyaspartic or epoxy coating transforms a bare concrete slab into a surface that's easy to clean, resistant to oil and chemicals, and capable of lasting decades. Summit Surface Company uses commercial-grade materials — the same systems used in car dealerships and commercial garages — not the big-box-store epoxy kits that peel within a year. Every installation starts with diamond grinding to open the concrete's pores for mechanical adhesion, followed by a high-solids primer, a full broadcast of decorative vinyl chips, and a UV-stable polyaspartic topcoat that resists yellowing in Alabama's intense summer sun. The result is a floor that looks like it belongs in a custom home — and holds up to everything you throw at it.

Installation

How We Install It

01

Diamond Grinding

We diamond-grind the entire floor to create a mechanical profile — the most critical step for long-term adhesion. No acid wash shortcuts.

02

Crack & Joint Repair

Cracks and control joints are filled and stabilized before any coating is applied to ensure a smooth, uniform finish.

03

Primer & Base Coat

A high-solids epoxy primer is applied, followed by the color base coat. Decorative vinyl flakes are broadcast to full rejection.

04

Polyaspartic Topcoat

Two coats of UV-stable polyaspartic sealer lock everything in and provide the final sheen and protection layer.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a garage floor coating take to install?

Most jobs span 2–4 days. We take the time needed for proper prep, coating, and cure between phases so the finished product performs as it should. Stay off the floor for at least 24 hours after the final topcoat, and wait 72 hours before driving vehicles on it.

Will the coating yellow over time in Alabama's climate?

No. We use a UV-stable polyaspartic topcoat specifically selected for southern climates. This is different from standard epoxy, which yellows with UV exposure. Your floor will hold its color for years.

What is the difference between epoxy and polyaspartic?

Epoxy is the base system used for adhesion and buildup. Polyaspartic is a UV-resistant aliphatic coating used as the topcoat. The best garage floor systems use both — epoxy for the base and polyaspartic for the topcoat. That's exactly what we install.

My floor has cracks. Can it still be coated?

Yes. Minor cracks and surface imperfections are repaired during the prep phase before any coating is applied. Significant structural cracks may need evaluation, which is why we do an on-site assessment before every job.

How much does a garage floor coating cost in Alabama?

Residential garage floor coatings typically range from $8–$12 per square foot depending on size, system selected, and concrete condition. We provide detailed written estimates — contact us for a free on-site quote.

Do you coat garage floors in Birmingham and Jasper?

Yes. Summit Surface Company is based in Jasper and serves the entire Birmingham metro area, Walker County, Jefferson County, and surrounding counties across North Central Alabama.

What does the lifetime coating warranty cover?

For qualifying installations, our written lifetime coating warranty covers delamination, peeling, and coating failure caused by covered material defects or our installation/workmanship. It does not cover damage from abuse, chemical spills beyond the coating system’s specified use, or structural concrete issues identified and disclosed during the estimate. The written warranty supplied with your estimate or contract controls, including maintenance requirements and the process for reporting a claim.
